Dr. sc.
Juraj Belaj, PhD, scientific adviser at the Institute of Archaeology, will hold a lecture on the tripartite landscape structures whose positioning symbolizes the relationships between the major Slavic deities. The lecture will explain the key models of such sacred spatial organisation, how these landscapes can be discovered and can these triangles shed light on the process of christianisation of the Croats.

U sklopu projekta Life on the Roman road (UIP-05-2017-9768, HRZZ) i programa izložbe „Avari i Slaveni“ u srijedu 13.11.

As a part of „Life on Roman road“ project (UIP-05-2017-9768, HRZZ) and the program of the exhibition „Avars and Slavs“, on Wednesday 13th November 2019, Pia Šmalcelj Novaković will give a popularization lecture about Avars. The Avar material culture left its mark, above all, in over 60000 graves, two thirds of which belong to the 8th century, making it one of the best documented Early Medieval cultures in Europe. Thus, the Avars represent one of the last nomadic communities that significantly changed the political map of Europe in the early Middle Ages, lingering in the Carpathian Basin for over 200 years, remaining pagan and not giving up some of the basic determinants of their nomadic identity. In this lecture, we will explore exactly what we know about Avars and their emergence, life and warfare.

Projekt FEMINE – Lovas

Project FEMINE – LovasJuly – August 2019

Within the research project Iron Age Female Identities in the Southern Carpathian Basin / FEMINE (IP-06-2016-1749), funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, trial archaeological excavations were continued in Lovas in Syrmia during July and August 2019. A biritual cemetery was discovered in A. Starčevića Street in the centre of Lovas, dating from the end of the Early Iron Age and the beginning of the Late Iron Age.
The excavations carried out in 2019 revealed inhumation graves with richly equipped women, and items of costume and jewellery and everyday items. What stands out is a female grave containing a pair of Early La Tène zoomorphic bronze fibulae and amphora-shaped glass beads dated to the end of the Early Iron Age, i.e. to the Čurug phase. Moreover, there is the important find of a grave with bronze bracelets, glass beads, and bronze fibulae, which can be dated to the turn of the Early and Middle La Tène. These are burials of adult women; particular importance will be given to the upcoming bioarchaeological analyses of skeleton remains. We thank Danica Krpan, the owner of the excavated land, and the Municipality of Lovas and Mayor Tanja Cirba, for making the excavations possible.

June and July 2019

Tijekom lipnja i srpnja 2019. godine Institut za arheologiju (Juraj Belaj) nastavlja arheološko istraživanje lokalitet Pakrac – stari grad u samom centru grada Pakraca.
Excavations at the site Pakrac-Old Town
During June and July 2019, the Institute for Archeology (Juraj Belaj) continues archaeological research of Pakrac – the Old Town in the very center of the town of Pakrac. This year’s research once again focuses on the previously discovered Gothic church in the yard of the Old town. According to the previous indicators, the church was built in the 13th century and the walls were significantly thickened around the year 1500. In the first phase, it was made of precisely chiselled stone. The spindle-shaped staircase, entrance threshold, base of some semi-columns  have been preserved …
Everybody interested is welcome to visit us, and after the excavations there will be a public presentation of the result.

From the 6th to 27th of May 2019 Institute of Archaeology, under the leadership of Dr K. Botić, carried out the excavation of Bršadin – Pašnjak pod selom site. The site is situated south of the village Bršadin near Vukovar. This year’s excavation was a continuation of the 2016 research. With financial support of the Ministry of Culture Probe 1 was explored to the virgin soil, i.e. to the relative depth of about 2 m. The explored layers contained the remains of houses and layers that probably served as drainage and were located on a sterile virgin soil. According to the movable finds this year’s layers and structures can also be dated to the late Neolithic, i.e. the late Sopot culture with the visible influences of Vinča C-D/D1 phases.
