SMAC – Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz (State Museum for Archaeology in Chemnitz). Autor: KDG.

Short and clear – SMAC (State Museum for Archaeology in Chemnitz) is one of the best presented archaeological museums I ever visited!
SMAC is a „young“ museum which opened its doors to the public in 2014. It found its „home“ in the former Schocken department store – an icon of the architectural movement „Neues Bauen“.
The museum presents roughly 300 000 years of cultural history. The permanent exhibition spreads on three floors, on 3000 square meters and maps the archaeological history and development, mainly of the Saxony region, but not exclusively.
A visitor is literally „climbing up“ the archaeological layers, all thanks to the spectacular and highly innovative presentations following the latest technological standards, learning and experiencing natural and cultural changes – from glaciers and early humans, to our era, medieval times and into the industrial era.
Exploring this museum one feels like a character in a science-fiction movie in which one wanders through some sterile, modern lab, where, on the principle of the time machine, one finds a selection of material symbolically covering the „entire“ human history.
Informative panels are bilingual, clear, with enough important and detailed information providing a good source of knowledge both for general and professional audience. The design of the panels/information stations is very clear, aesthetic and above all functional. There are also several interactive „chambers“ which represent an interesting medium for interactive participation allowing visitors to „add their own contribution“ and in return gain some extra knowledge in a fun and creative way.
The presentations of each and every museum section are done in a meticulous way, yet following a clear logic, trying to understandably present even things that are usually quite complex to comprehend, especially to general public. As the famous quote goes: „If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.“ Well, the experts working at creating those presentations at the SMAC museum definitely do understand it very well
The result of their knowledge is a museum in which a visitor inevitably learns a lot and understands the tasks of archaeology better. With this as a result, the main idea of the museum, „Discovering cultures – Understanding history“, is definitely achieved.
SMAC is a museum which can serve as an example of how a careful and reasoned combination of ancient and modern yields an amazing museum presentation which truly every visitor enjoys. Moreover, it also proves once again how important an interdisciplinary approach is for achieving good results.
